MoveFlat is a flatmate and flat-hunting site that operates across London. Unlike most other sites in this category, MoveFlat is completely free of charge for all users, all of the time. With a strong London-focus, MoveFlat has a number of area-specific features that help those living in the capital find somewhere to live that is just right for them. Unfortunately, MoveFlat isn’t particularly popular with users and doesn’t operate on the same scale as other sites we have reviewed in this category. That said, as with all property searches, finding the right place is all about luck, so it’s always worth checking out a free site like this to see whether the perfect place for you is hidden away here.
Placing an ad with MoveFlat is quick and easy. Users simply upload photographs of the place they have on offer (or themselves, as applicable) and then add as much information as they like. Unlike other sites that have paid membership, users are able to add phone numbers and email addresses to their adverts, meaning anyone who is interested can get in touch straight away. While ads are simple to produce, they do lack some of the more advanced features that are available on other sites – such as interactive maps, “about the area” information and video ads. It’s clear that this site operates much more like a traditional classified ads site than the other sites we have reviewed, which makes us question the quality of adverts too (there’s no ongoing moderation of adverts here, as with other sites).
Although this site does lack some of the features we have come to appreciate on other sites, such as Spareroom or RoomBuddies, there are a few things here that were handy and helped to improve the site a little. Users can compare ads quickly using the simple “checkbox” system, and also filter results based on the same categories, as well as by location, price and property type. Adverts can also be viewed according to age, so that you don’t waste time looking at adverts that have long since expired. Finally, more practical additions, such as a calculator app and online notebook help you to work out which properties would work for you and keep track of them easily, too.
It goes without saying that, with such a narrow geographical focus, if you’re not looking for a place in London, MoveFlat isn’t going to be all that useful for you. If you are, for a free site, MoveFlat has a fair bit to offer, so it’s quite possible that you could find the perfect place to live (or the ideal flatmate) at this site. That said, the layout of the site and the quality of the ads aren’t great, so we would definitely recommend joining other sites too in order to improve your chances of finding somewhere you like.
